    You say no prescription is needed for HeartGard. The pet does need to be checked by my vet for heart worms prior to using, right?

    Yes that is correct. Heartgard is a preventative not a treatment for heartworms. Therefore you nee to make sure your dog doesn't have heartworm at the first place.
